Evening Arrival and Morning Breakfast
We left NHLC at 5:15, and after a 90 minute drive, we set up camp at the Antietam KOA Campgrounds. The Troop reserves the pavilion and the 3 adjacent sites for the 20 Scouts and 5 Adult Leaders. Once camp is set up, preparations are made for the next days activities, and lights out at 10:00PM.
Exploring the Cave
A short 30 minute drive brings us to the Yankauer Nature Preserve, where we parked our cars. A brisk 20 minute walk for about 2 miles along the road and through the woods brings us to the cave entrance. We split into 4 groups, each with one adult and 4 to 6 scouts. We spent about 2 hours exploring the upper section of the cave, and peering over the ledge of the 50 ft. drop into the lower section, which is accessible only with special climbing gear.
